THE CARNIVAL OF NICE, ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA

SALUT!

COMMENT ÇA VA AUJOURD’HUI? Yesterday I started talking to you about MARDI GRAS and CARNAVAL and explained how it came about as a day of celebration before a fasting period following a Christian tradition. It was a day to eat and drink a lot, and a day to have a lot of fun too. To make sure everybody would let it all go freely, people started to hide behind masks, DES MASQUES and costumes, DES COSTUMES.

LES GENS SE DÉGUISENT – People dress up.

Today I’d like to pay a special attention to LE CARNAVAL DE NICE and all its extravaganza. It’s the biggest event taking place on the French Riviera, LA CÔTE D’AZUR, in winter – the city of Nice being located on the French Riviera of course.

LE CARNAVAL DE NICE is one of the biggest Carnivals in the world, believe it or not. This year it started on February 13th, so just a few days ago, and will be going on till March 1st. Party time guys! C’EST LE MOMENT DE FAIRE LA FÊTE!

This year, the many floats honor LE ROI DE LA MUSIQUE “the King of Music”, a huge colorful character made of pulp cardboard heading the parades and the whole Carnival until it is burned in a happy fire at the end of the festivities. Talking about parades, they take place day and night, with amazing floats and over a thousand musicians and dancers coming from all over the world. Pretty amazing, right?

The Carnival also includes LES BATAILLES DE FLEURS, during characters dressed in extravagant outfits appear on floats decorated with the most beautiful flower compositions, and throw flowers to the public.

ILS LANCENT DES MIMOSAS, DES GERBERAS, DES LYS, DES MARGUERITES.

Guess how many flowers are thrown during this Carnival… About 100,000 flowers that local producers start planting a few months before to make sure they can provide to the needs of the party.

That’s it, you’re ready to book your flight to Nice! BON VOYAGE! And for more information and pictures of this amazing Carnival, just go to the official website: www.nicecarnaval.com
