I guess we’re expressing our feelings in French this week. Yep. I thought that today we could learn how to express concern. Do you guys worry a lot? I tend to and I hate it! Working on it… So let’s learn the words and expressions you will need if you want to share your worries with the French world.

UNE INQUIÉTUDE – a worry

ÊTRE INQUIET / INQUIÈTE– to be worried

VOUS ÊTES DE TEMPÉRAMENT INQUIET VOUS? – Are you a worry monger?

TROP RÉFLÉCHIR/SE PRENDRE LA TÊTE – to overthink

IL A PEUR DE PARTIR – He’s scared to leave her

JE CRAINS QU’IL NE SOIT TROP TARD. – I fear it might be too late.

ELLE A PEUR QU’IL PARTE. – She’s scared he might leave

Notice that in those last two phrases, you’re expressing an emotion, so the verb following the relative QUE is in the subjunctive. But that will be another lesson in itself!

Now, if someone else, a friend of yours for example, is expressing concern about something on a day you’re feeling great about life, here’s what you can say: 

NE T’INQUIÈTE PAS, ÇA VA ALLER – Don’t worry, it’s going to be alright.

Or more formally, NE VOUS INQUIÉTEZ PAS, ÇA VA ALLER

RELAX MAX! – Relax! (that’s familiar)

DÉTENDS-TOI UN PEU – Relax a little

More formal… DÉTENDEZ-VOUS UN PEU.

And if that doesn’t calm your friend down, try that: 

FERME TA GUEULE, TU ME SAOULES! – Shut up, you’re annoying me!

BOIS UN COUP POUR TE DÉTENDRE

or more formal BUVEZ UN COUP POUR VOUS DÉTENDRE – have a drink and relax.

So which one will you be? The worry monger, or his or her friend. À VOUS DE CHOISIR! BYE!
