FRENCH LESSON ON “LA CHANDELEUR”, CREPES DAYS!

COUCOU!

Aujourd’hui c’est la Chandeleur, le jour où l’on mange des crêpes en France! Allez, sortez vos poêles et que ça saute!

So what is LA CHANDELEUR? It’s the Catholic holiday of “Candlemas”, the day Jesus was presented. There used to be processions to celebrate the event during which people would light candles.

ON ALLUMAIT DES CHANDELLES.

Then came the tradition of making crepes. According to a old myth, if you didn’t make crepes that day, you ran the risk of having a bad wheat crop.

Basically as usual, we, Frenchies, turned the event into a food day, the day we make and eat crêpes. It’s actually a fun tradition! And crepes are super easy to make. I’m definitely not a good cook at all, but I can make crepes. My favorite part is flipping the crepes into the air. Hopefully they fall back into the pan and not right next to it… But to make the dough itself, it’s simple. All you need is eggs, DES OEUFS, flour, DE LA FARINE, milk, DU LAIT, and then whatever you want to spread on your crepes.

When I think that originally Candlemas is actually a feast that commemorates the purification of the Virgin Mary and the presentation of baby Jesus. You would have thought it would have been turned into a fasting day or something. So glad that didn’t happen! Instead it’s a very warm and friendly event where friends gather, eat, drink and have fun!
