START GIVING SOME ADVICE IN FRENCH
COUCOU!
J’ESPÈRE QUE VOUS PÉTEZ LA FORME AUJOURD’HUI! C’EST LE DÉBUT DE LA SEMAINE, MIEUX VAUT ÊTRE EN FORME!
Do you guys know how to give advice in French? Well, I’d like to look into that right now. First of all, a piece of advice is UN CONSEIL.
VOUS AVEZ BESOIN DE CONSEILS? OU BIEN VOUS AVEZ PEUT-ÊTRE DES CONSEILS À DONNER AUX AUTRES, QUI SAIT?
DONNER DES CONSEILS – to give some advice.
Let’s imagine we’re giving advice to a grumpy young man, a friend, so we’ll be in a familiar context. What could we say to him… Here are a few options
TU DEVRAIS SORTIR T’AMUSER. – You should go out and have fun.
ÇA TE FERAIT DU BIEN DE BAISER UN PEU PLUS. – You’d feel better if you fucked a bit more.
IL VAUDRAIT MIEUX QUE TU NE L’APPELLES PAS. – You’d better not call her/him.
Notice that IL VAUDRAIT MIEUX QUE is followed by a verb in the subjunctive.
Now, last bit of advice…
POURQUOI PAS FAIRE LA TOURNÉE DES BARS POUR TE CHANGER LES IDÉES? – Why not go on a bar tour to change your mind?
Ok, now, let’s imagine we’re giving advice to a middle-aged woman, recently divorced. What could we say to her? I’ve got a few suggestions:
IL VAUDRAIT MIEUX QUE VOUS FASSIEZ VOS VALISES ET QUE VOUS PARTIEZ EN VACANCES – You’d better pack your suitcases and go on vacation.
VOUS DEVRIEZ PRENDRE UN PETIT JEUNE POUR VOUS DÉTENDRE! – You should get a young man to relax!
IL AURAIT MIEUX VALU NE PAS VOUS MARIER – You’d been better off not getting married.
Maybe I won’t ever get into counseling. I have a feeling I’d get in trouble… But at least you got a few expressions that will allow you to advise your French friends.
