The Super Bowl and French vocabulary related to sports
SALUT!
Are you guys getting all organized to watch the Superbowl with friends? Party time yay! For me, the Super Bowl is one of those moments when I remember than I’m more French that I sometimes want to admit it. Because guess what, I don’t understand anything about football! Sorry but that’s the sad truth of my situation.
By the way, in French, football is LE FOOTBALL AMÉRICAIN and soccer is LE FOOTBALL. And to play soccer will be JOUER AU FOOT or FAIRE DU FOOT. The verbs JOUER and FAIRE are generally used to refer to sports, but the prepositions used with one verb and the other are different. FAIRE DU or DE LA or DE L’ but JOUER AU or À LA or À L’.
Back to the Superbowl! So it’s taking place on Sunday and for a few hours America will stand still! And of course in the meantime some people will make tons of money with their commercials. A commercial is UNE PUBLICITÉ in French.
I was trying to think if we have a similar kind of sports event in France that takes place yearly, but I don’t think we do. I mean, French people do love soccer and I guess LA FINALE DU CHAMPIONNAT DE FRANCE DE FOOTBALL is a notable event, but we’re not as good as you guys to turn a sports event into an entertainment feast. How do you guys do it?! Seriously. It’s so much fun! I went to see a Dodgers’ game here in Los Angeles recently and same thing. I don’t understand what’s going on on the stadium, but everything surrounding the game is so fascinating and so American to me, that I love it anyway. So when I go to see a basketball game and actually understand what’s going on, you can imagine how excited I get.
Anyway, enough rambling about my experience with American sports events. Let me give you some useful vocab related to sports.
UN MATCH – a game
UN STADE – a stadium
UN CHAMPIONNAT – a championship
UN TOURNOI – a tournament
FAIRE DU SPORT – to do sports
