Question for you, right off the bat. What type of word is CHALEUREUSEMENT?
So… it’s an adverb. What is an adverb?… It’s the “how”… A word that tells you how an action is done.
LA FRANCE VOUS ACCUEILLE CHALEUREUSEMENT! VENEZ!
HOW TO FORM FRENCH ADVERBS
How do you form an adverb when you know the corresponding adjective?
Generally speaking, you can just add the suffix -MENT to the feminine form of the adjectives. Examples:
FRANC – FRANCHE – FRANCHEMENT
FROID – FROIDE – FROIDEMENT
ILS M’ONT ACCUEILLI FROIDEMENT. PAS AGRÉABLE DU TOUT.
If the adjective ends with a vowel, you just need to add the suffix -MENT. Example:
VRAI – VRAIMENT
PASSIONÉ – PASSIONÉMENT
AIMEZ PASSIONÉMENT, SINON C’EST PAS LA PEINE!
If the adjective ends with -ent, change that ending into -emment
VIOLENT – VIOLEMMENT
Careful with the pronunciation.
RÉCENT – RÉCEMMENT
RÉCEMMENT, JE ME SUIS RÉINSTALLÉE EN FRANCE!
If the adjective ends with -ant, change that ending into -amment
COURANT – COURAMMENT
VOUS PARLEZ FRANÇAIS COURAMMENT, VOUS? NON? BIENTÔT ALORS!
And of course, just like with any other rules, there are a few original words that will not fit into that smothering pattern!
EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE OF FRENCH ADJECTIVES/ADVERBS
Some adjectives will take an accent when being turned into adverbs:
PRECIS – PRÉCISÉMENT
ÉNORME – ÉNORMÉMENT
IL S’EST ÉNORMÉMENT ARRANGÉ, DITES DONC. IL EST CANON MAINTENANT!
And then others decide to take on another type of accent and stand out a little bit more.
GOULU – GOULÛMENT
Fun sounding word, isn’t it? There’s also
ASSIDU – ASSIDÛMENT
ALLEZ, ON APPREND LE FRANÇAIS ASSIDÛMENT S’IL VOUS PLAÎT! JE VÉRIFIERAI…
For now, enjoy the rest of your day or night, depending on what part of the world you’re in, and I’ll talk to you guy again next Monday.
BONNE FIN DE SEMAINE!
