HOW TO SPEAK FRANGLAIS
How to speak with French & English words
COUCOU!
I was walk ing in the streets of Paris the other day, and I don’t know if it’s just me but I kept hearing French people using English words like crazy. A lot more than before, I feel. Anyway, I thought I’d share with you some of the English words you can use, that will make you feel closer to home when traveling in France.
First, we have a few English words we’ve been using forever. Some of you may know that some of us Frenchies got worried a few decades ago, to the point that the government passed a law to limit the use of English words in France. Whatever. Here are a few English words that have survived and are very widely used.
UN SANDWICH
UN FAST-FOOD
UN WEEK-END
UN THRILLER
UN STEAK
UNE STAR / UNE STARLETTE
LE SHOPPING
O.K.
UN PIERCING
LE FREEZER (LE CONGÉLATEUR)
And then, interestingly enough, we have quite a few words related to sex that we stole from you native English speakers. Why? No idea. But we commonly use:
LE SEX-APPEAL
UN SEX-SHOP
UN SEX-SYMBOL
Then, people use a lot of English words when talking about the web, or anything related to it. Thanks Bill and Steve… Here are a few examples of phrases you may hear or use:
Y A DES TRUCS HYPER FUN SUR LE WEB!
J’AI TÉLÉCHARGÉ UNE APPLICATION SUR MON IPHONE. JE TE L’ENVOIE PAR MAIL TOUT DE SUITE!
And finally, speaking franglais will often be associated with younger generations. If you wanna sound cool in French, keep some English in.
JE KIFFE TROP CES SHOES.
IL A REFAIT SA LIFE ET MAINTENANT IL EST FUN.
J’AI TROP BESOIN DE FAIRE UN BREAK LÀ. JE SUIS OUT!
ELLE A CUSTOMISÉ SON DRESSING, FRANCHEMENT C’EST COOL!
Conclusion, you’re under no pressure at all to learn perfect French. Mind you… I’ll put pressure on you! Grab some books, watch more videos, and practice your French, a little bit every day.
TCHAO! (Well yeah, we steal Italian words too)
