OH LA LA! FRENCH SUMMER HEAT

Learn sexy French vocabulary: Heat alert!

SALUT LES AMIS!

VOUS AVEZ BIEN RENDU HOMMAGE À VOTRE PAPA HIER, J’ESPÈRE! ET PUIS HIER, C’ÉTAIT AUSSI LE PREMIER JOUR DE L’ÉTÉ! ET ICI EN FRANCE, C’ÉTAIT AUSSI LA FÊTE DE LA MUSIQUE! The music festival.

For those of you who don’t know about the French music festival, it takes place every year on June 21st, and on that day, hundreds of concerts are organized all over the country. Isn’t that a great way to start the summer? Music and dance, let’s set the tone for a fun hot summer!

LEARN FRENCH “HEAT” VOCABULARY

L’ÉTÉ VA ÊTRE CHAUD CHAUD CHAUD!!! SORTEZ VOS ÉVENTAILS… OU BIEN FAITES MARCHER LA CLIM, PLUS EFFICACE…

Since we’re talking about the summer, we gotta talk about heat, LA CHALEUR. To say that the weather’s hot, we’ll say IL FAIT CHAUD. Watch out not to translate this literally from the English “it is hot” here. IL EST CHAUD, will mean that someone, a guy is ready to do something, or to do someone actually… In the feminine form, the sexual connotation of the expression becomes inevitable ELLE EST CHAUDE will refer to a woman ready for some sexual action. Unless ELLE refers to a specific thing, like water for example: ELLE EST CHAUDE, CETTE EAU.

To say that someone’s sexy we tend to use the English word HOT, more and more often, especially younger generations. IL EST HOT, ELLE EST HOT.

Now if you say, talking about a situation, C’EST CHAUD! It means that you’re dealing with some tricky matter. J’AI PERDU MA CARTE D’IDENTITÉ ET JE PASSE LE BAC AUJOURD’HUI, ÇA VA ÊTRE CHAUD!

Note that this expression is very familiar.

Back to the summer heat! If the weather gets really hot, we’re going to say:

C’EST LA CANICULE! RESTEZ AU FRAIS.

HOW TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE HEAT IN FRENCH

And here are some expressions you can use to complain about the heat. Remember we’re being French so let’s not forget to complain please! We’d be missing out on the Frenchness of the experience.

QUELLE CHALEUR!

JE CRÈVE DE CHAUD!

IL FAIT TROP CHAUD POUR TRAVAILLER!

OH LA LA, ÇA CHAUFFE TROP!

A little note on that last expression, ÇA CHAUFFE TROP can also be used to refer to a heated situation.

IL VIENT D’APPRENDRE QU’ELLE LE TROMPE DEPUIS 2 MOIS. ÇA VA CHAUFFER QUAND IL VA LA VOIR!

That’s it, now you’re ready for all kinds of French heat! Just a little bit of advice though. If you’re traveling to France and really want great hot weather, go to the South of France rather than Paris. Because right now, as I’m talking to you guys, looking out of my window, all I can is a very grey sky filled with clouds and I’m really using my imagination to talk to you about typical summer temperatures and weather. Never mind…

ALLEZ VA, ON GARDE LE SOURIRE ET LA BONNE HUMEUR, HEIN? A PLUS!
