SALUT TOUT LE MONDE ! J’ESPÈRE QUE VOUS ALLEZ TOUS BIEN! Let’s explore a fun familiar word and all its derivatives today.  I’m talking about the word« gueule ». Have you heard of it ?

Meaning of “une gueule”

First of all, UNE GUEULE is an animal’s mouth. LA GUEULE DU CHIEN / LA GUEULE DU LOUP etc.

But this word is also used to refer to someone’s face either positively… QUELLE BELLE GUEULE IL A! …or negatively: QUELLE SALE GUEULE IL A!

You can also say to a good friend of yours who looks dreadful: T’AS UNE SALE GUEULE AUJOURD’HUI, QU’EST-CE QUI T’ARRIVE?

Next, if you use UNE GUEULE with the preposition DE or D’ and a noun with a negative connotation, you’ll be able to say what the person looks like as in: J’AI UNE GUEULE D’IMBÉCILE, MOI?

Or here’s another example taken from the film L’HOTEL DU NORD, a French classic. (EXTRACT FROM HOTEL DU NORD). Amazing delivery by French actress Arletty. It’s a line pretty much everybody knows in France. Can’t beat it!

Idiomatic Expressions with “gueule”

Now, let’s look at the idiomatic expressions including GUEULE. They’re very commonly used in a familiar context and there are quite a few of them.

AVOIR DE LA GUEULE = to look good, classy

TU AS DE LA GUEULE DANS CETTE TENUE. ÇA CHANGE

Then we have : POURQUOI VOUS FAITES LA GUEULE ?

In the same style we have : FAIRE UNE GUEULE D’ENTERREMENT = to look dreadful

or FAIRE UNE DRÔLE DE GUEULE = to make a funny face

VOUS FAITES UNE DRÔLE DE GUEULE. C’EST PARCE QUE VOUS NE COMPRENEZ PAS LE FRANÇAIS ?

Maybe you’ll understand this one :

SE PÉTER LA GUEULE is to get drunk

VOUS VOUS ÊTES PÉTÉ LA GUEULE  HIER SOIR ? C’EST POUR ÇA QUE VOUS NE COMPRENEZ PAS…

JE VOIS… VOUS AVEZ LA GUEULE DE BOIS…

AVOIR LA GUEULE DE BOIS = to be hungover.

MAIS NON, JE NE ME FICHE PAS DE VOTRE GUEULE!

SE FICHER DE LA GUEULE DE QUELQU’UN = to make fun of someone

Which may lead to:

SE FENDRE LA GUEULE = to crack up laughing

Just be careful in all the excitement, NE VOUS CASSEZ PAS LA GUEULE.

SE CASSER LA GUEULE = to fall

You also have: POUSSER UN COUP DE GUEULE = to push a rant

EN PRENDRE PLEIN LA GUEULE = to be a victim of attacks, to face fierce criticism.

JE M’EN SUIS PRIS LA GUEULE HIER À LA SOIRÉE, PAS COOL.

If you’re a victim of attacks, unpleasant words or if you’re really tired of someone talking at you rather than with you. GUEULEZ UN BON COUP! =  SCREAM  YOUR HEART OUT!

Meaning of familiar expressions: “ta gueule” / “vos gueules”

If you want to scream in French, try: TA GUEULE ! to one person familiarly.

Or  VOS GUEULES ! to several fierce critics, bores, or selfish ramblers. I hate those!

Alternatively, you can respond with a smile and calmy say:FERME TA GUEULE, TU ME SAOULES.

or FERMEZ VOS GUEULES, VOUS ME SAOULEZ.

What can I say, sometimes you have to. Well, I guess I’ll finish on that beautiful, peaceful note.
