French words & expressions to talk about the weather
The British are known to talk about the weather a lot. Well, the French may talk about it less, but it’s still a good topic to use to practice your French! Plus, it might come in handy to understand the weather forecast if you happen to turn the TV on in your hotel room and come across one of our delightful weather forecast presenters.
Here are some words and expressions related to the weather in French. Before you start memorizing the list below, please note that the French for “weather” is “le temps“, which can also mean “time” in French, so watch out!
Il fait quel temps aujourd’hui?/Quel temps fait-il aujourd’hui?: What’s the weather like today?
Il va faire quel temps demain?: What’s the weather going to be like tomorrow?
Il fait beau: It’s sunny
Il fait mauvais: The weather’s bad
Il fait chaud: It’s hot
Il fait froid: It’s cold (slang= ça caille)
Il fait doux/bon: The temperature is mild
Il fait nuageux/Il y a des nuages: It’s cloudy
Il pleut: It’s raining
Il neige: It’s snowing
Il fait du vent: It’s windy
Il y a du brouillard: It’s foggy
C’est la canicule: It’s extremely hot
And here are a couple of familiar expressions related to the weather and that are fun to know:
Il fait un froid de canard! = It’s very cold!
Il pleut des cordes! = It’s pouring down!
