Learn French words and expressions related to money

Salut  les amis !

First of all, Qu’est-ce qui fait tourner le monde ? Notre monde moderne, capitaliste ?  Qu’est-ce qui est au centre de tout ? QUELQUE CHOSE QUI EST UN PEU TABOO EN FRANCE… We call it « le nerf de la guerre »  among many other things as you will see… Have you guessed ? Money, yes ! C’EST L’ARGENT !

French Slang words related to money

In French slang we have a plethora of words to talk about it : la thune, le pognon, le fric, le blé, l’oseille. Notice how « le blé » and « l’oseille » are first of all plants with very rich properties, valued since the Middle Ages.

How to pay in French

Then we have several words to say « to pay ». You may already know the verb PAYER. Well, if you go to stores or restaurants in France, they may ask you : 

VOUS RÉGLER COMMENT ?

Which is exactly the same as VOUS PAYEZ COMMENT ?

UN PAIEMENT, UN RÈGLEMENT both mean a payment.

Anyway, coming back to what I was telling you earlier, people don’t really like to talk about money in France. At least not the way Americans do, not so openly. I guess it’s considered slightly « vulgar » in a way. 

Asking how much someone earns in French

If you go to France and ask someone VOUS GAGNEZ COMBIEN ?

You may get a variety of reactions such as…

• Euh, pardon… On se connaît ? Vous voulez vraiment parler d’argent ? (rire débile)

• (gros éclat de rire) Oh mais je gagne un pognon fou. Je me remplis les poches. Je suis hyper friquée, moi. Ouais, ouais.
• (tire la gueule) Putain, je gagne une misère, sérieux. On est hyper taxés en France. Résultat, je ne gagne pas un rond. Je suis tout le temps sur la dèche.
• Vous voulez savoir mon salaire ? Mais mêlez-vous de vos oignons ! Enfin !

Yes, ON PREND LA TAGENTE, ON TROUVE DES EXCUSES, OU ON SE BRAQUE. 

EN TOUT CAS, ON NE VOUS DIT PAS COMBIEN ON GAGNE. 

And we change topics fast, because «  le temps, c’est de l’argent », even in France and even if we don’t like to admit it. 

How to ask a friend for money in French

Of course if a friend comes to you and says : 

JE SUIS RAIDE, FAUCHÉ, FAUCHÉ COMME LES BLÉS, TU POURRAIS PAS ME FILER UN PEU DE THUNE S’TE PLAIT ?

• Tu as besoin d’argent. Mais je t’en prête, bien sûr. On est amis. Qu’est-ce que c’est l’argent après tout ? De l’énergie. Des petits bouts de papier. De la ferraille. Tiens voici 5 euros. T’inquiète pas, ça va aller.

Friendship has no price right ? That’s why your friend, scared to lose your friendship, may also say…

• T’as besoin de m’emprunter de l’argent ? Ah merde, je viens de m’acheter une décapotable. Ça m’a coûté une blinde. J’ai plus un rond ! J’t’assure, j’rigole pas, cette voiture m’a coûté un bras! J’ai claqué tout mon fric. Je suis vraiment désolée. D’ailleurs, je voulais te demander, t’aurais pas 100 balles à me prêter ?

Just kidding guys. Of course we all have kind, generous friends to help us out when we need it.

ON LES EMBRASSE TOUS ET ON LES REMERCIE. C’EST IMPORTANT L’AMITIÉ, BEAUCOUP PLUS QUE L’ARGENT.
